Introduction: Two Common SDA Arguments
The Seventh-day Adventist Church (SDA) often raises two strong objections:
Objection #1: Luke 4:16
“As was His custom, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath.”
π Claim:
Jesus kept the Sabbath → Therefore, Christians must also keep Saturday.
Objection #2: Isaiah 66:23
“From Sabbath to Sabbath, all flesh shall come to worship before me.”
π Claim:
Sabbath observance continues even in the new heaven and new earth.
At first glance, these arguments seem convincing.
But when examined in context, covenant theology, and apostolic teaching, they fall apart.
1. Luke 4:16 — Was Jesus Teaching Sabbath Obligation for Christians?
“And he came to Nazareth… and as was his custom, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath.” (Luke 4:16)
This refers to Jesus Christ.
Key Context: Jesus Was Born Under the Law
St. Paul explains:
“God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under the law” (Galatians 4:4)
π Meaning:
- Jesus lived as a faithful Jew
-
He observed:
- Sabbath
- Passover
- Temple worship
Important Principle
π Jesus followed the Old Covenant because it was still in force
But this does NOT mean:
- The Old Covenant remains binding after His death and resurrection
2. Jesus Did Not Simply “Keep” the Sabbath—He Reinterpreted It
Jesus did not merely observe the Sabbath—He redefined its meaning.
He challenged legalistic interpretations:
“The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath” (Mark 2:27)
“The Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath” (Mark 2:28)
He performed works on the Sabbath:
- Healing the sick (Luke 13:10–17)
- Allowing disciples to pluck grain (Mark 2:23)
π These actions shocked the Pharisees because:
Jesus was asserting authority over the Sabbath itself.
3. If Luke 4:16 Proves Sabbath Obligation… Then What About Other Jewish Practices?
Let’s be consistent.
Jesus also:
- Observed circumcision
- Celebrated Jewish feasts
- Followed dietary laws
π Question:
Should Christians also be required to do all these?
The Apostles answered clearly: No.
4. The Apostolic Church Did Not Continue Sabbath Obligation
At the Council of Jerusalem, the Apostles ruled:
❌ No obligation to keep Mosaic Law
❌ No command to observe Sabbath
Instead, Christians gathered on Sunday:
“On the first day of the week… we were gathered to break bread” (Acts 20:7)
5. Early Church Fathers: No Longer Keeping the Sabbath
Ignatius of Antioch (c. 107 AD)
“No longer observing the Sabbath, but living according to the Lord’s Day.”¹
Justin Martyr (c. 155 AD)
“We all gather on Sunday… because Jesus rose from the dead.”²
π The early Church—closest to the Apostles—did not interpret Luke 4:16 as binding Christians to Saturday Sabbath.
6. Isaiah 66:23 — Literal Sabbath in Heaven?
“From Sabbath to Sabbath, all flesh shall come to worship before me.”
At first glance, this seems like eternal Sabbath observance.
But context is key.
A. Isaiah Uses Symbolic, Prophetic Language
The Book of Isaiah is full of imagery:
- Animal sacrifices (Isaiah 66:20)
- Priests and Levites (66:21)
π Question:
Will there be animal sacrifices in heaven?
❌ No—because Christ fulfilled them (Hebrews 10:1–10)
Therefore:
π “Sabbath to Sabbath” is also symbolic language, not a literal command.
7. Meaning of “Sabbath to Sabbath”
This phrase expresses:
- Continuous worship
- Unending communion with God
In the New Covenant:
True worship is no longer tied to a specific day:
“The true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth” (John 4:23)
8. The Fulfillment: Christ Is Our Sabbath
The deeper meaning of the Sabbath is fulfilled in Christ.
“There remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God” (Hebrews 4:9)
π This “rest” is:
- Not Saturday observance
- But eternal life in Christ
9. Catholic Teaching on Sabbath Fulfillment
The **Catholic Church teaches:
“Sunday… fulfills the spiritual truth of the Jewish Sabbath” (CCC 2175)
Why Sunday?
- Resurrection of Christ
- Beginning of New Creation
- Apostolic tradition
10. Final Refutation of SDA Objections
Objection #1 (Luke 4:16):
✔ Jesus kept the Sabbath
❌ But as part of the Old Covenant
❌ Not as a command for Christians
Objection #2 (Isaiah 66:23):
✔ Mentions Sabbath
❌ But in symbolic prophetic language
❌ Not literal eternal observance
Conclusion: From Shadow to Reality
The Sabbath:
- Was real
- Was holy
- Was important
But it was also:
π A shadow pointing to Christ
π₯ Apologetics Mic Drop
If Jesus keeping the Sabbath proves Christians must do the same…
π Then why didn’t the Apostles command it after His resurrection?
