Did Adam, Noah, and the Patriarchs Keep the Saturday Sabbath? A Biblical and Historical Refutation of the SDA Claim

7th day Sabbath is exclusively to Israel only
Introduction: The SDA Argument on the Sabbath

The Seventh-day Adventist Church (SDA) strongly teaches that the Saturday Sabbath is a universal and eternal command, rooted in creation:

“God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it” (Genesis 2:3).

From this, they argue:

  • The Sabbath existed from creation
  • Therefore, all humanity—from Adam to today—must observe Saturday

But here’s the critical question:

👉 Were Adam, Noah, Abraham, and other pre-Mosaic figures ever commanded to observe the Sabbath?

Let’s examine Scripture, early Christianity, and Catholic teaching.

1. Genesis 2:3 — A Blessing, Not a Command

Genesis 2:3 states:

“So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy.”

But notice carefully:

  • There is no command to Adam or Eve
  • There is no instruction to rest
  • There is no mention of Sabbath observance by humans

This is descriptive, not prescriptive.

Key Insight:

God rested—but He never told Adam to imitate that rest.

If Sabbath observance were essential from creation:

  • Why is there no record of Adam keeping it?
  • Why is there no punishment for breaking it?

👉 Silence in Scripture here is significant.

2. The First Command to Keep the Sabbath Appears in Exodus

The first explicit Sabbath command appears in:

Exodus 16 (manna instructions)
Exodus 20:8–11 (Ten Commandments)

This occurs during the time of Moses, not Adam or Noah.

Even more decisive:

“The LORD has given YOU the Sabbath” (Exodus 16:29)

This was spoken specifically to Israel, not to all humanity.

3. The Sabbath as a Covenant Sign with Israel

Scripture is explicit:

“The Sabbath is a sign between me and the people of Israel forever” (Exodus 31:16–17)

👉 This means:

  • The Sabbath is not universal
  • It is a covenant sign for Israel alone

Like Circumcision

Just as circumcision was:

  • Required for Jews
  • Not required for Gentiles

So too the Sabbath.

4. No Evidence the Patriarchs Observed the Sabbath

Let’s examine key figures:

Adam and Eve

  • No command
  • No example of Sabbath observance

Noah

  • Called righteous (Genesis 6:9)
  • Yet no mention of Sabbath-keeping

Abraham

  • Praised for obedience (Genesis 26:5)
  • But again: no Sabbath recorded

David and Solomon

  • Lived under the Law
  • But Sabbath was already part of the Mosaic covenant—not creation law

👉 If Sabbath were universal, it would appear consistently—but it does not.

5. The New Testament: Christians Are Not Bound to the Sabbath

The New Testament clarifies the issue decisively.

St. Paul writes:

“Let no one pass judgment on you… with regard to a Sabbath” (Colossians 2:16)

Paul identifies the Sabbath as:

“a shadow of things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ” (Col. 2:17)

The Apostolic Council (Acts 15)

At the Council of Jerusalem, the Apostles decided:

👉 Gentile Christians are not required to keep:

  • Circumcision
  • Mosaic Law
  • Sabbath observance

If Sabbath were essential, it would have been included.

6. Early Christians Worshipped on Sunday, Not Saturday

From the earliest times, Christians gathered on Sunday, the day of Christ’s Resurrection.

Biblical Evidence:

“On the first day of the week… we were gathered to break bread” (Acts 20:7)

Church Fathers Testimony

Ignatius of Antioch (c. 107 AD)

“Those who lived according to the old order… have come to a new hope, no longer keeping the Sabbath, but living according to the Lord’s Day.”¹

Justin Martyr (c. 155 AD)

“We all gather on Sunday… because Jesus Christ rose from the dead on that day.”²

👉 This proves:

  • The Apostolic Church did not continue Saturday Sabbath observance
  • Sunday worship is ancient and apostolic

7. Catholic Teaching on the Sabbath

The **Catholic Church teaches:

“Sunday… is the fulfillment of the Sabbath” (CCC 2175)

Key Points:

  • The Sabbath prefigured Christ
  • Christ fulfilled the Law (Matthew 5:17)
  • Sunday celebrates the New Creation

8. Theological Fulfillment: From Sabbath to Christ

The Sabbath pointed to something greater:

“There remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God” (Hebrews 4:9)

This “rest” is not a day—but salvation in Christ.

9. Final Verdict: Did Early Humanity Keep the Sabbath?

No command before Moses
No evidence of observance by patriarchs
Explicitly given only to Israel
Not binding in the New Covenant

👉 Therefore:

The SDA claim that the Sabbath is a universal creation ordinance binding on all people is not supported by Scripture or early Christian history.

Conclusion: Sunday Is Not a Human Invention—It Is Apostolic

The shift from Saturday to Sunday is not corruption—it is fulfillment.

  • Rooted in the Resurrection
  • Practiced by the Apostles
  • Confirmed by the early Church
  • Taught by the Catholic Church

🔥 Apologetics Mic Drop

If the Sabbath was meant for all humanity from creation…

👉 Why did God wait until Moses to command it?
