Are Jews Still Bound to the Sabbath? What Happens After Conversion to Christianity? A Biblical and Catholic Answer

Introduction: The Core Question Behind Exodus 31:16

One of the strongest arguments used by Seventh-day Adventist Church (SDA) is:

“The Sabbath is a perpetual covenant” (Exodus 31:16)

From this, they conclude:

  • The Sabbath is eternal
  • It binds not only Israel but all people—even Christians today

But this raises two critical questions:

👉 Are Jews still obligated to keep the Sabbath today?
👉 If a Jew converts to Christianity, are they still bound by it?

Let’s answer this through Scripture, early Church teaching, and Catholic doctrine.

1. Understanding Exodus 31:16 — “Perpetual Covenant” in Context

“Therefore the people of Israel shall keep the Sabbath… as a covenant forever.” (Exodus 31:16)

This was given through Moses to Israel, not to all nations.

Key Clarification:

The word “forever” (Hebrew: olam) does not always mean eternal without change.

👉 Example:

  • The Levitical priesthood was called “perpetual” (Exodus 40:15)
  • Yet it was fulfilled and transformed in Christ (Hebrews 7)

2. The Sabbath Was a Covenant Sign Specifically for Israel

Scripture is explicit:

“It is a sign between me and the people of Israel forever” (Exodus 31:17)

Important Implication:

  • The Sabbath = Covenant Sign
  • Covenant Signs are not automatically universal laws

Parallel:

  • Circumcision → sign of Abrahamic covenant
  • Sabbath → sign of Mosaic covenant

👉 Both were binding under the Old Covenant, but not necessarily under the New.

3. Are Jews Still Obligated Today?

From a purely Old Covenant perspective:

Yes—if one remains under the Mosaic Covenant, the Sabbath is binding.

But here is the turning point:

👉 The Old Covenant has been fulfilled and surpassed by Christ.

4. Christ Fulfilled the Law — Not Abolished, but Perfected

Jesus Christ said:

“I have not come to abolish the Law, but to fulfill it” (Matthew 5:17)

Fulfillment means:

  • Bringing the Law to its intended completion
  • Transforming shadows into reality

The Sabbath pointed to something greater:
👉 Rest in Christ

5. The Apostolic Decision: No Sabbath Obligation for Christians

At the Council of Jerusalem, the Apostles addressed whether Gentiles must follow Mosaic Law.

The decision:

  • No circumcision required
  • No Mosaic Law imposed
  • No Sabbath command enforced

👉 This is decisive.

If Sabbath observance were essential, the Apostles would have required it.

6. St. Paul: Christians Are Not Bound to the Sabbath

Paul writes clearly:

“Let no one pass judgment on you… with regard to a Sabbath” (Colossians 2:16)

He further explains:

“These are a shadow… but the substance belongs to Christ” (Col. 2:17)

To the Galatians:

“You observe days and months… I fear for you” (Galatians 4:10–11)

👉 Paul warns against returning to Old Covenant observances.

7. What Happens When a Jew Converts to Christianity?

This is crucial.

When a Jew accepts Christ:

👉 He enters the New Covenant

And therefore:

  • Is no longer bound by Mosaic ceremonial laws
  • Is not required to keep the Sabbath as Israel did

St. Paul explains:

“You are not under law but under grace” (Romans 6:14)

Even Jewish Christians Were Not Forced

Early Jewish Christians:

  • Sometimes kept Sabbath culturally
  • But were not required doctrinally

👉 It became a matter of freedom, not obligation.

8. Early Church Fathers Confirm This Teaching

Ignatius of Antioch (c. 107 AD)

“No longer observing the Sabbath, but living according to the Lord’s Day.”¹

Justin Martyr (c. 155 AD)

“The new law requires you to keep perpetual Sabbath… and yet you do not understand.”²

(Meaning: the true Sabbath is spiritual, not merely a day.)

👉 The early Church clearly moved beyond Saturday observance.

9. Catholic Teaching: Sunday Fulfills the Sabbath

The **Catholic Church teaches:

“Sunday… fulfills the spiritual truth of the Jewish Sabbath” (CCC 2175)

Why Sunday?

  • Day of Resurrection
  • Beginning of New Creation
  • Apostolic practice

10. The Deeper Theology: From Law to Grace

The Sabbath was:

  • A sign
  • A shadow
  • A preparation

But in Christ:

  • The shadow gives way to reality
  • The Law gives way to grace

Hebrews explains:

“There remains a Sabbath rest… for the people of God” (Hebrews 4:9)

👉 This rest is:

  • Not Saturday
  • But salvation in Christ

11. Final Answer to the Question

Are Jews still obligated?

👉 Only if they remain under the Old Covenant

But…

For those who accept Christ:

❌ Not bound to Sabbath law
❌ Not required to observe Saturday
✅ Called to live in the fulfillment—Christ

Conclusion: The SDA Argument Falls Short

The SDA claim misunderstands:

  • The nature of covenant
  • The meaning of “forever”
  • The fulfillment of the Law in Christ

🔥 Apologetics Mic Drop

If the Sabbath law of Exodus 31:16 is still binding on Christians…

👉 Why did the Apostles never command it in Acts 15?
