Did God Establish Many Churches?
The clear answer from Scripture is no. God did not establish many churches. Jesus Christ founded only one Church during His earthly ministry:
-
Matthew 16:18 – “And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”
👉 Note the singular term “my church,” not “my churches.”
-
Ephesians 4:4–5 – “There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call—one Lord, one faith, one baptism.” → Paul identifies the Church with one body, not thousands.
-
Colossians 1:18 – “And he is the head of the body, the church.”
👉 Christ is the one Head, and His Church is His one Body.→ Christ is the Head, and His Church is the Body. One Head cannot have thousands of rival bodies.
The Apostles continued this unity. They founded local communities (Corinth, Ephesus, Antioch, Rome), but all were under one apostolic authority, not independent sects (cf. Acts 2:42, Acts 15:6–11).
Why Are There Thousands of Christian Denominations Today?
Today, scholars estimate there are over 40,000 Christian denominations worldwide. How did this happen if Christ built only one Church?
1. Human Division Foretold in Scripture
-
Acts 20:29–30 – St. Paul warned: “Fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock… to draw away the disciples after them.”
-
1 Corinthians 1:10–13 – Paul rebuked early divisions: “Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you?”
2. Historical Breaks in Christian Unity
-
1054 – The Great Schism: Division between the Catholic West and Orthodox East.
-
1517 – Protestant Reformation: Martin Luther’s protest sparked multiple breakaways.
-
16th–20th century: Endless splinter groups (Baptists, Methodists, Pentecostals, Adventists, Jehovah’s Witnesses, etc.) each claiming to restore true Christianity.
Instead of preserving unity, these movements multiplied divisions—something Christ never intended.
Did God Command People to Establish Their Own Churches?
Nowhere in the Bible does God command individuals to establish their own church. Instead:
-
Matthew 16:18 – Jesus Himself founded His Church.
-
Matthew 28:19–20 – The Apostles were commissioned not to start competing churches but to preach the Gospel and make disciples.
-
John 17:21 – Jesus prayed: “That they may all be one; even as you, Father, are in me, and I in you.”
The biblical mandate is unity, not fragmentation.
The Catholic Church’s Teaching
The Catechism of the Catholic Church affirms this unity:
-
CCC 816 – “The sole Church of Christ… subsists in the Catholic Church, which is governed by the successor of Peter and by the Bishops in communion with him.”
-
CCC 817 – “In fact, in this one and only Church of God from its very beginning there arose certain rifts… But in subsequent centuries much more serious dissensions appeared and large communities became separated.”
Thus, division is a human failure, not God’s will.
Conclusion
-
Christ founded only one Church (Matthew 16:18).
-
The Apostles spread this one faith across the world, maintaining unity (Ephesians 4:4–5).
-
Thousands of denominations today are the result of human division, not God’s command.
-
The Bible nowhere commands men to establish their own churches—it commands them to remain united in the one Church of Christ.
The challenge for every Christian today: to seek not the “church of my choice,” but the Church Christ Himself established.
