When it comes to the Roman Catholic Church, there are many misconceptions, half-truths, and even myths—especially from those who strongly oppose its teachings. But history, Scripture, and logic reveal powerful facts about the Catholic Church that often go unspoken in many Protestant circles. This article aims to uncover some important truths that every Christian deserves to know.
✝️ 1. The Catholic Church Is the Original Church Founded by Christ
Many Protestants believe their churches represent "true Christianity" apart from Catholicism. However, historical evidence shows that the Catholic Church traces its roots directly to Jesus Christ and the Apostles.
๐️ “And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church...” — Matthew 16:18
From the 1st century, early Christians recognized the Bishop of Rome (the Pope) as a central figure in preserving unity and doctrine. The Catholic Church’s apostolic succession remains unbroken to this day, something no Protestant denomination can claim.
๐ 2. The Bible Was Compiled by the Catholic Church
It surprises many Protestants to learn that the Catholic Church gave us the Bible. The early Church councils—such as Council of Rome (AD 382), Hippo (393), and Carthage (397)—were responsible for determining which books were inspired and to be included in the New Testament.
Long before there was a “Bible-alone” movement, the Church relied on Sacred Tradition and Sacred Scripture, both flowing from the same source: the Apostles.
๐ Without the Catholic Church, there would be no Bible as we know it today.
๐️ 3. The Early Christians Were Liturgical and Sacramental — Not "Bible Only"
The early Christians did not attend Sunday “Bible studies” or simply read Scripture at home. They celebrated the Eucharist (Holy Mass), believed in the Real Presence of Jesus, baptized infants, prayed for the dead, honored the saints, and followed a hierarchical structure of bishops, priests, and deacons.
Many of the so-called "Catholic inventions" are actually early Christian practices recorded by early Church Fathers like St. Ignatius of Antioch (AD 110), St. Justin Martyr, and St. Irenaeus.
๐ฏ️ 4. The Canon of the Bible Was Finalized by the Catholic Church — Including the Deuterocanonical Books
Many Protestants reject 7 books found in Catholic Bibles (Tobit, Judith, Wisdom, Sirach, Baruch, and 1 & 2 Maccabees), calling them "Apocrypha."
But here’s the truth:
✅ These books were part of the Septuagint (Greek Old Testament) used by Jesus and the Apostles.
✅ They were included in all Christian Bibles until Martin Luther removed them in the 1500s.
✅ The Council of Trent (1546) simply reaffirmed what was already recognized for over 1,000 years.
⛪ 5. The Catholic Church Gave the World Hospitals, Universities, and Charity Institutions
While often accused of being corrupt or power-hungry, the Catholic Church has been a tremendous force for good throughout history.
-
Universities like Oxford, Cambridge, and the Sorbonne were founded by Catholics.
-
Hospitals and orphanages were pioneered by the Church.
-
Catholic religious orders (like the Jesuits and Franciscans) brought education, science, and mercy to the world—long before governments took on those roles.
๐ 6. Catholics Do NOT Worship Mary or the Saints
A common misunderstanding is that Catholics “worship” Mary or the saints. This is simply not true.
-
Catholics venerate (honor) Mary and the saints, not worship them.
-
Worship is reserved for God alone.
-
Asking saints to pray for us is just like asking a friend to pray—except the saints are already in heaven, fully united to God.
Even early Christians wrote inscriptions asking for prayers from martyrs and saints in the catacombs.
๐ 7. Some of the Greatest Christian Thinkers and Scientists Were Catholic
From St. Thomas Aquinas to St. Augustine, the Catholic Church has produced some of the brightest theological minds in history.
And in the realm of science, many Catholic clergy and laymen were pioneers:
-
Gregor Mendel — Father of Genetics (Augustinian monk)
-
Georges Lemaรฎtre — Father of the Big Bang Theory (Catholic priest)
-
Nicolaus Copernicus — Catholic astronomer who proposed heliocentrism
๐ข Final Thoughts: Don’t Just Hear the Critics — Hear the Full Story
Many Protestants are not fully informed about the history and richness of the Catholic faith. In fact, many were taught distorted versions of history or doctrine. But truth has nothing to fear—and if we seek it honestly, we will find it.
The Roman Catholic Church is not perfect because it is made up of imperfect people. But it remains the Church founded by Jesus Christ, sustained through centuries by the Holy Spirit, and continues to proclaim the full Gospel to the world.
