An Apologetic Examination of Creation, Human Origins, and the Limits of Modern Scientific Claims
Introduction
One of the most common challenges raised by modern atheists against the biblical account of creation is this question:
“If Adam and Eve were the first humans, how old would they be today if they were still alive?”
The question is usually followed by another claim:
“Science proves humans evolved from monkeys.”
These arguments are often presented as if they completely disprove the Bible. Yet a careful examination of Scripture, Catholic theology, early Christian writings, and modern science reveals that the conflict is largely based on misunderstanding both theology and science.
In this article we will examine:
-
What the Bible actually teaches about Adam and Eve
-
Whether Adam and Eve could still be alive today
-
The Catholic Church’s teaching about human origins
-
Whether humans truly “came from monkeys”
-
How early Christians understood the creation account
-
Why atheistic evolution fails as a philosophical explanation for humanity
1. What the Bible Actually Says About Adam and Eve
The Book of Genesis describes the creation of the first humans:
“So God created man in his own image,
in the image of God he created him;
male and female he created them.”
—Genesis 1:27
Genesis later identifies the first man and woman as Adam and Eve:
“The man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.”
—Genesis 3:20
According to Scripture, Adam and Eve were real historical persons who lived at the beginning of human history.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church confirms this teaching:
“The account of the fall in Genesis 3 uses figurative language, but affirms a primeval event… a deed that took place at the beginning of the history of man.”¹
In other words:
-
Genesis contains symbolic language
-
But it refers to a real historical beginning of humanity
2. How Old Would Adam and Eve Be If They Were Still Alive?
The Bible itself answers this question.
Adam did not live forever on Earth.
Genesis records his death:
“Thus all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years; and he died.”
—Genesis 5:5
So according to the Bible:
-
Adam lived 930 years
-
Eve likely lived a similar lifespan
-
Both eventually died
Therefore, the question “How old would Adam and Eve be today if they were still alive?” is based on a false premise.
They are not alive today.
The Bible teaches that death entered the world because of sin.
“Through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin.”
—Romans 5:12
Adam and Eve lost immortality after the Fall:
“Lest he put forth his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever.”
—Genesis 3:22
God expelled them from Eden so they would not live forever in a fallen state.
3. The Catholic Church and Human Origins
Contrary to what many people think, the Catholic Church does not reject scientific research about human origins.
The Church allows scientific investigation into human biological development while maintaining key theological truths.
The Catechism states:
“The question about the origins of the world and of man has been the object of many scientific studies which have splendidly enriched our knowledge.”²
However, the Church insists on several non-negotiable truths:
1. God is the Creator of the universe
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”
—Genesis 1:1
2. The human soul is created directly by God
The Catechism teaches:
“Every spiritual soul is created immediately by God.”³
3. Humanity ultimately descends from a first pair
This teaching is known as monogenism.
Pope Pope Pius XII explained in Humani Generis:
“The faithful cannot embrace the opinion that… the human race descended from several first parents.”⁴
Thus Catholic doctrine affirms:
-
A real first human pair
-
A real fall from grace
-
A divine origin of the human soul
4. Did Humans Really Come From Monkeys?
One of the most repeated claims in atheist arguments is:
“Humans evolved from monkeys.”
However, modern evolutionary biology itself does not teach this.
Instead, it proposes that:
-
Humans and modern apes share a common ancestor
The theory was popularized by Charles Darwin in On the Origin of Species (1859).
But even Darwin never claimed humans came directly from monkeys.
Modern apes such as chimpanzees and gorillas are considered evolutionary cousins, not ancestors.
Yet there are still major scientific problems with the claim that purely natural processes created humanity.
These include:
1. The Origin of Consciousness
Humans possess:
-
rational thought
-
moral awareness
-
language
-
spiritual awareness
No purely material process explains the sudden emergence of self-aware intelligence.
2. The Genetic Information Problem
DNA functions like a biological code.
Codes require information sources.
Random mutations have never been observed to generate complex new biological information capable of producing a new species of intelligent beings.
3. The Missing Transitional Fossils
Despite over a century of searching, the fossil record still shows gaps between ape-like ancestors and modern humans.
This is known as the “missing link problem.”
5. What Early Christians Believed About Adam
Early Christian writers consistently affirmed Adam as a historical person.
For example, St. Irenaeus wrote:
“For in Adam we had offended God by not obeying His command.”⁵
Similarly St. Augustine of Hippo taught:
“All men were in that one man when all were that one man.”⁶
This belief is tied to the doctrine of Original Sin.
6. The Parallel Between Adam and Christ
Christian theology connects Adam directly with Jesus Christ.
The Apostle Paul wrote:
“For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.”
—1 Corinthians 15:22
Paul even calls Jesus the “New Adam.”
“The first man Adam became a living being; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit.”
—1 Corinthians 15:45
If Adam were only a myth, the entire theological comparison with Christ would collapse.
This is why Christianity has always understood Adam as a real historical ancestor of humanity.
7. Why Atheistic Evolution Cannot Explain Human Existence
The real issue is not simply biological development.
The deeper question is why humans exist at all.
Atheistic evolution attempts to explain humanity through:
-
random mutation
-
natural selection
-
unguided processes
But this explanation leaves several profound mysteries:
-
Why does the universe exist?
-
Why do physical laws allow life?
-
Why do humans possess moral awareness?
-
Why are humans capable of knowing God?
Christian theology offers a coherent answer:
Human beings were created intentionally by God.
8. Science and Faith Are Not Enemies
The Catholic Church has long taught that science and faith complement each other.
The Catechism explains:
“Though faith is above reason, there can never be any real discrepancy between faith and reason.”⁷
Scientific discoveries can explain how natural processes occur.
But theology answers why creation exists at all.
Conclusion
The question “If Adam and Eve were the first humans, how old would they be today?” misunderstands the biblical narrative.
According to Scripture:
-
Adam lived 930 years
-
He eventually died
-
Humanity continued through his descendants
Modern science does not actually prove that humans came from monkeys. Rather, it proposes evolutionary relationships that remain debated and incomplete.
The Catholic Church recognizes legitimate scientific research but insists on foundational truths:
-
God created the universe
-
The human soul is directly created by God
-
Humanity descends from a real first pair
-
The Fall introduced sin and death into the world
Far from being disproved, the biblical account of human origins continues to provide the most coherent explanation for human dignity, morality, and spiritual awareness.
In the end, the deepest question remains not “Did humans evolve?” but rather:
“Why does humanity exist at all?”
The Christian answer remains the same as it was two thousand years ago:
“You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.”
—St. Augustine
