Jesus Christ the Eternal High Priest: Biblical Evidence and Early Church Witness

Jesus Christ the Eternal High Priest: Biblical Proof from Hebrews and the Church Fathers
Introduction

One of the most frequent objections raised against Catholic Christianity is the claim that “there are no priests in Christianity” because Jesus alone is the priest. While this claim sounds biblical, it collapses under careful examination of Sacred Scripture and early Christian history.

Ironically, Scripture teaches not only that Jesus is a priest, but that He is the Eternal High Priest, whose priesthood did not end at Calvary and continues forever.

This article will show:

  1. That Scripture explicitly calls Jesus High Priest

  2. That His priesthood is eternal and unchangeable

  3. That the Early Church unanimously believed this

  4. Why Catholic priesthood flows from, not competes with, Christ’s priesthood

1. Jesus Christ Is Explicitly Called High Priest

The New Testament leaves no ambiguity—especially in the Epistle to the Hebrews.

“Since then we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God…” (Hebrews 4:14)¹

“Consider Jesus, the apostle and High Priest of our confession.” (Hebrews 3:1)²

These passages were written decades after the Resurrection, proving Christ’s priesthood continues in heaven.

2. Christ Is Priest Forever

Christ’s priesthood is not temporary like the Levitical priests.

“You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.” (Hebrews 7:17)³

“He holds His priesthood permanently, because He continues forever.” (Hebrews 7:24)⁴

The Greek term aparabaton (แผ€ฯ€ฮฑฯฮฌฮฒฮฑฯ„ฮฟฮฝ) means unchangeable and non-transferable, proving Christ’s priesthood:

  • Cannot end

  • Cannot be abolished

  • Cannot be replaced

3. Inserted Apologetic Table: Protestant Objections vs Catholic Rebuttals

Protestant Objections vs Catholic Rebuttals

Protestant ObjectionCatholic Rebuttal (with Sources)
“There are no priests in Christianity.”Scripture explicitly calls Jesus High Priest after His Ascension (Heb 4:14)¹. A priesthood that lasts forever cannot be abolished (Heb 7:24)⁴.
“Christ’s sacrifice was once-for-all, so no priests are needed.”Catholics agree: Christ’s sacrifice is once-for-all (Heb 10:10)⁵. Priests do not repeat Calvary; they participate in the eternal offering (Heb 8:3)⁶.
“All believers are priests, so there’s no ministerial priesthood.”The Bible distinguishes the common priesthood from ordained ministry. Israel was a kingdom of priests (Exod 19:6) yet still had ordained priests.
“Jesus is the only mediator; priests replace Him.”Catholic priests act in persona Christi (2 Cor 5:20)⁷. Hebrews says Christ’s priesthood is unchangeable—not unshareable (Heb 7:24)⁴.
“The New Testament never calls Christian ministers priests.”The function of priesthood is present: sacrifice (Heb 8:3)⁶, Eucharist (Luke 22:19)⁸, forgiveness of sins (John 20:21–23)⁹.
“Priests were invented after Constantine.”Ignatius of Antioch (AD 107) describes bishops, presbyters, and deacons presiding over one Eucharistic altar¹⁰.
“The Mass contradicts Hebrews.”Hebrews condemns repeated animal sacrifices, not Christ’s eternal sacrifice made present in heaven (Heb 9:24)¹¹.
“Melchizedek has nothing to do with the Eucharist.”Melchizedek offered bread and wine (Gen 14:18)¹². Hebrews explicitly applies this priesthood to Christ (Heb 7).
“The early Church believed only in a spiritual priesthood.”Clement of Rome (AD 96) speaks of ordained ministers offering liturgical sacrifices in proper order¹³.
“If Christ is priest forever, no other priests can exist.”Participation does not equal replacement. Just as apostles shared Christ’s mission, ordained priests share His priesthood without replacing Him (Heb 8:1–3)⁶.

4. Early Church Fathers Confirm Christ’s Eternal Priesthood

Irenaeus of Lyons (c. AD 180)

“The Church offers the new oblation of the New Covenant, which Christ taught.”¹⁴

John Chrysostom (4th century)

“The priest stands there fulfilling a figure, but the power and grace are of Christ Himself.”¹⁵

The Fathers clearly teach:

  • Christ remains the true High Priest

  • Earthly priests minister through Him and in Him

Conclusion

Scripture, the Early Church, and Christian worship unanimously affirm one truth:

Jesus Christ is the Eternal High Priest—and His priesthood did not end with the Cross.

The Catholic priesthood does not compete with Christ’s priesthood; it flows from it, exactly as the early Christians believed and practiced.

To deny this is not biblical Christianity—it is a modern reinterpretation unknown to the Apostles.
