Is Mary the Mother of God? A Biblical and Historical Defense of the Catholic Title "Theotokos"

Mary mother of God
🕊️ Introduction

One of the most honored titles of the Blessed Virgin Mary is “Mother of God”, or in Greek, Theotokos, meaning “God-bearer.” But is this title accurate? Some non-Catholic groups argue that Mary is only the mother of Jesus’ human nature—not of God Himself.

Let’s explore what Scripture, history, and the Church teach about this powerful title.

📖 What Does the Bible Say?

Mary gave birth to Jesus Christ, who is:

  • True God and true Man (John 1:1, 14)

  • Fully divine and fully human—one person, two natures

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us…”
John 1:14

When Mary conceived Jesus in her womb by the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:35), she conceived the second Person of the Trinity, not just a human shell. Therefore, she did not give birth to just a human being—but to the divine Person of Jesus Christ.

🧠 Council of Ephesus (431 AD)

The early Church clarified this question during the Council of Ephesus in 431 A.D. in response to the heresy of Nestorius, who claimed Mary should only be called “Christotokos” (Mother of Christ), not “Theotokos” (Mother of God).

The Church Fathers rejected this and officially affirmed:

“If anyone does not confess that the Emmanuel is truly God and that therefore the holy Virgin is the Mother of God (Theotokos), let him be anathema.”
Council of Ephesus, 431 AD

🧾 Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC)

CCC 495:
“Called in the Gospels 'the mother of Jesus', Mary is acknowledged and honored as truly the Mother of God (Theotokos).”

This teaching is not about elevating Mary above God, but about protecting the truth of who Jesus is—fully God and fully man from the moment of His conception.

❓Objections Answered

➤ “Mary didn’t create God!”

That’s true—God is eternal. But being the “Mother of God” doesn’t mean Mary is the source of God’s divine nature. It simply means she is the mother of Jesus, who is God.

➤ “She’s the mother of Jesus’ human nature only!”

Wrong—mothers give birth to persons, not to natures. Jesus is one divine Person. Mary is the mother of that one Person, not just one of His two natures.

💡 Why This Matters

  • It defends the divinity of Jesus Christ.

  • It affirms the unity of Jesus’ divine and human natures.

  • It safeguards the doctrine of the Incarnation.

🙏 Conclusion

Yes, Mary is rightly called the Mother of God—not because she is the origin of the divine, but because she gave birth to the divine person of Jesus Christ, God made flesh.

To deny this title is to risk misunderstanding who Jesus truly is.
